The components used on the TAP-28 are pretty common and have standard mounting configurations. A wide range of parts may be used. The parts listed below will work with the TAP-28 but may not be the best options for a particular application and may not be the cheapest options. Use this parts locator as a starting point and verify parameters before ordering as errors may occur.
Microcontroller
The TAP-28 will support a variety of 28 pin PICs in a DIP package; the part number will end in /SP for the Microchip SPDIP package. See the supported devices list for some of the microcontrollers that are supported.
New parts are continuously being added to the Microchip product line, so the supported devices list may be incomplete. To determine if a particular part is compatible, compare it against the pin diagram for supported parts.
Devices not shown as being supported may be compatible with the TAP-28 boards except for the mapping of hardware functions to the connectors. If power, /MCLR and oscillator pins are in the placement shown in the supported devices pin diagram, the microcontroller may be used on the TAP-28 board without damage but the hardware functions may not be on the proper connectors.

LEDs
T1/3mm LEDs in either vertical or right-angle mount are supported. If the TAP-28 is used in an enclosure, right-angle LEDs and switches can be accessible through an end panel.
Diffused LEDs are suggested as easier on the eyes. Various colors may be used, limited only by the supply voltage to the TAP-28 and the output current available - the maximum allowed current is 25 mA.

Switches
Vertical
or right-angle switches may be used for S1 and S2. The RESET switch must be a vertical switch.
Right-angle switches are used where the button projects from the edge of the board, and are usually used with a button cap.
The patterns on the board are for standard 6 mm tactile switches made by
a number of vendors. Vertical switches will have 4 leads. Right-angle switches have two leads plus two support pins from the metal
frame.
